You see this little fucker right here? This is my buddy Blastoise. Im a Generation 1 pokemon master. Playing since the games came out in 1998. 16 years. My first pokemon was Squirtle. My first caught pokemon was Pikachu. The first pokemon I ever trained to level 100 was Vaporeon.
Now, everyone knows when everything converted over to the Gameboy Advance games that all your old pokemon left on your RBY/GSC games were left behind. They would never travel with you again. Which I always thought was one of the saddest things in the world. Then in 2004 FireRed/LeafGreen was released. Now, I never got them for Xmas or Birthday as gifts (we were really broke and poor at the time). So I always thought FireRed/LeafGreen would just be the pokemon games I missed out on. However, my FireRed version would find its way to me in a different way.
One day in gym class I was sitting on the bleachers after running myself dry on hacky sack. I was roughly 14 years old at the time. I opened my backpack to see if I had my homework for the next class completed (Spoiler alert! I didnt). So, since the Gym Teacher had disappeared for a few minutes I thought this to be a brilliant time to DO MY HOMEWORK! Woo! Because it was totally due in 30minutes. ANYWAY! I dropped my pen and it fell below the bleachers. Well, when I squeezed myself below the bleachers finally (Cuz like…dude that was my only pen. I needed that.) I saw something red on the ground a little further back. My initial intention was to leave it behind, I mean, it was probably a candy wrapper or trash anyway. Well, as you guessed it, it wasnt. I picked it up and BAM! It was a copy of FireRed. I nearly shat myself. I crawled out, looked around. There were no other backpacks around on the bleachers so if it belonged to anyone, then they certainly werent in my class. And it hadnt been dropped that day as the gym had been closed for over a week due to cleaning and I was in the first gym class of the day. So like…I mean….I kept it. Cuz yea… When is this EVER gonna happen again!!! So! I kept the game. Went home that day and reset it. I started a new file and played through Kanto once again after many years. I chose Squirtle as my starter as I *always* did.
Time passed, and Blastoise made it’s way over to Sapphire Version. And then up to Diamond and Pearl, over to Platinum and then across the world to Black and White then he packed up his bags and followed me 2 years into the future to Black and White 2. I fucking loved this blastoise mkay? There was only about 3 pokemon I continuously made it a point to transfer through the next games. And Blastoise was always the first one I transferred.
Now, 10 years later. After starting my adventure anew with Blastoise in 2004 in Kanto 2.0 I have transferred him once more across the seas with me into Kalos. But now, something’s different. Now, I can “bond” even more with my pokemon. After 10 years of looking at the exact same Blastoise pixels I can finally pet it. Feed it. Make it happy. I know the Pokemon-Aime system isnt very advanced. Its more of a mini-game than anything. But for a lot of true pokemon trainers it means a lot. This meant a lot to me. Then, seeing him evolve once more into Mega-Blastoise for the first time felt like some sort of achievement. Like…”this is mine. Its always been mine. He will forever be MY Blastoise. We’ve been through so many adventures together and here he is, evolving once again. Becoming stronger.” at this point I only wish I had nicknamed him something way back when.
10 years have passed and Blastoise has seen Kanto, the Sevii Islands, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, Unova, and Kalos. He’s been on pokemon Colleseum and Gale of Darkness. Hes been on my TV! He even helped my out in Battle Revolution on the Wii. He has seen every legendary pokemon and defeated everyone of the Elite 4 and Champions in every region he has faced. We’ve gained a lot of new pokemon along the way and the team has changed countless times. and it will probably change again. We’re well acquainted with Metagross and Zebstrika but the newest members joined our adventure when I reached Kalos. Aurorus and Haxorus. Both bred shinies. Both are valuable assets to the team and wont be going anywhere any time soon.
For now, welcome back to the team, Blastoise. It’s good to have you back my old friend.
